- the meaning of ‘personal information’, ‘sensitive personal information’, and ‘health information’
- the scope of the PRIS Act, including the IPPs, responsible information sharing, and interaction with the FOI Act
- what the privacy principles say, and
- how they apply in practice.
Why this module is important
Protecting the privacy of the personal information you hold is part-and-parcel of good public administration. This module will help you understand your legal obligations, and maintain the trust of your clients – and the reputation of your organisation.
Who this module is for
All members of staff, at any Western Australian public sector agency regulated by the PRIS Act. This includes State government departments and statutory authorities, State-owned corporations, local councils, and public universities in WA. It also includes contracted service providers to those organisations.
(If you are from an entity regulated by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), such as federal government agencies, non-profits and businesses around Australia, please instead see our Privacy Act Compliance Training. We also have modules for NSW and Victorian public sector agencies.)
Our Privacy Awareness Training module provides a solid basis for anyone who needs to understand privacy and the importance of protecting privacy in the course of their work. This module can work as an induction program for new staff, or as a refresher module as part of ongoing staff training. As a guide, this module takes around 45 minutes to complete.
For someone new to the privacy profession, this module will also work as a starting point from which to build your privacy expertise. The next step for privacy professionals – and indeed other professionals with an interest in the area, such as legal, information security, risk and compliance professionals – is to undertake one or more of our specialised eLearning modules and/or access our other resources on specific privacy topics.
