Our Director Anna Johnston is acknowledged as one of Australia’s foremost experts on privacy law and practice.

With her background as a lawyer, additional qualifications in public policy and management, and more than 18 years experience in legal, policy and research roles, Anna brings a breadth of perspectives and a wealth of experience to dealing with privacy and information management issues.

Anna is a current member of the Editorial Board of the Privacy Law Bulletin, and in 2010 was elected to the Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, Australia & New Zealand.

Anna is also a past Chair of the Australian Privacy Foundation, and has served on the editorial board of the Privacy Law & Policy Reporter, the Australian Law Reform Commission’s expert advisory group on health privacy, and the National E-Health Transitional Authority’s Consumer & Clinician Forum, as well as the University of New South Wales’ Interpreting Privacy Principles project team.

Anna was primary author of the 2005 and 2006 Australian country reports for Privacy International’s Privacy and Human Rights, and in 2005 was called upon to provide comment to the European Commission on the adequacy of Australia’s privacy laws.  She has given expert testimony before Senate and similar committees, spoken at numerous conferences, and is regularly asked to comment on privacy issues in the media.  During 2006 and 2007 Anna organised a coalition of NGOs and individuals as volunteer Campaign Director of NoIDCard, the successful campaign against the proposed Access Card.

As the former Deputy Privacy Commissioner for NSW, Anna also knows the regulator’s perspective.  She developed many of the protocols which guide the Privacy Commissioner’s Office today, as well as educational materials published by Privacy NSW.  Anna conducted the Office’s exhaustive review of the first four years of operation of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, and was actively involved in drafting the Health Records & Information Privacy Act 2002.

Anna holds a first class honours degree in Law, a Masters of Public Policy with honours, a Graduate Certificate in Management, a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, and a Bachelor of Arts.  She was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1996, and is an Accredited Mediator, registered under the Mediation Act 1997.

Our Associate, Stephen Wilson, is a leading international authority on digital identity and cyber security.  His career spans more than 23 years in IT, software engineering and R&D management, in both Australia and the US, and since 1995 he has specialised in e-security.  Stephen has helped organisations in government, health and finance throughout the Asia Pacific, with advice and management consulting in security strategy, architecture, privacy, risk management, governance, public policy, and technology selection.  Stephen holds an honours degree in Electrical Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science.

Our Senior Privacy Consultant, Lucy Blamey-Scott, previously held the position of Legal & Policy Officer with the NSW Privacy Commissioner’s Office.  Lucy regularly appeared on behalf of the Commissioner in privacy cases heard by the Administrative Decisions Tribunal, and authored the guide, Privacy and people with decision-making disabilities.  Lucy holds an honours degree in Law, and a Bachelor of Arts.  She was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1999.

Our Privacy Consultant, Emma Shaw, holds a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Wollongong.  Emma won a scholarship to university in 2004, and four university awards for Outstanding Performance.  Emma came first in her year in a number of subjects, including Public Interest Law and Human Rights Law.  She will be admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2010.  Emma commenced work with Salinger Privacy in 2009. 

Our Privacy Learning Consultant, Andrea Calleia, has extensive experience in the learning and development field, including implementation of a health privacy education program for the NSW Privacy Commissioner’s Office.  She has experience in both the private and public sectors, and holds a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment.  Andrea also holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Education and Human Resources from the University of New South Wales. 

Andrea co-developed our online training program, and delivers our face-to-face training.  She is consistently rated "5 out of 5" by our training participants and has been described as "excellent and engaging", "enthusiastic, clear and effective".

Our privacy consulting team has published a plain-language guide titled Conducting Workplace Surveillance, and an annotated guide to the NSW privacy laws, PPIPA in Practice.
