  • 10 December 2009 - We have just finalised a PIA for the Victorian Department of Health's HealthSMART program, on the implementation of its integrated Patient and Client Management System, in conjunction with Lockstep Consulting.
  • 8 December 2009 - Salinger Privacy has been engaged by the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to conduct a PIA of its $60M Ultranet project.
  • 13 November 2009 - Congratulations to our client the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, who last night won Highly Commended in the Australian Privacy Awards.  The overall Grand Award went to the Victorian Department of Justice, for whom we have also conducted privacy training.
  • 12 November 2009 - We've just published Edition 3.3 of "PPIPA in Practice", our annotated guide to the primary NSW privacy statute.
  • 11 November 2009 - Salinger Privacy Director Anna Johnston delivered a presentation on recent privacy cases at NSW Parliament House, as part of a half-day meeting of NSW privacy and FOI officers.
  • 9 November 2009 - Salinger Privacy has just been selected to conduct a privacy audit for CQUniversity.
  • 4 November 2009 - Two of our pieces of work have been showcased internationally, at the 31st International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners.  Held in Madrid this year, the conference included an information stall from our client the Victorian Privacy Commissioner, displaying both the PIA Guide and Data Matching Guide we developed for her Office.  (But you don't need to go to Spain to get a copy.  You can download a copy of either Guide from the Privacy Victoria website, under Publications > Guidelines.)  Our Director, Anna Johnston, was also in attendance at the conference.
  • 23 October 2009 - Our work for the new NSW Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) has just been published.  We prepared a Guidance Material Plan for the OIC, recommending a comprehensive set of policy and educational materials the OIC should develop, ready for the open government reforms due to commence in 2010.  Following stakeholder consultation a summary of our Plan is now available here.
  • 14 October 2009 - In Melbourne today, the Data Matching Guide we developed was the subject of a presentation by our client, the Victorian Privacy Commissioner, at the annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand chapter of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (iappANZ).  You can download a copy of Data Matching in the Public Interest  from the Privacy Victoria website, under Publications > Guidelines.
  • 7 October 2009 - We are proud to note that yet again one of our clients is a finalist in the Australian Privacy Awards, announced today by the Australian Privacy Commissioner.  The Public Interest Advocacy Centre, for whom we conducted a privacy audit and privacy training in 2008, is a finalist in the Community and NGO category.  Last year, our client AusCheck was a finalist in the Government category of the Awards.
  • 16 September 2009 - We have just completed a PIA for Federal Treasury on Stage 2 of a three-year, $30M multi-agency project being built by IBM to develop Standard Business Reporting
  • 9 September 2009 - Salinger Privacy has been engaged to assist Lockstep Consulting conduct a PIA for the Victorian HealthSMART program, on the implementation of its integrated Patient and Client Management System.
  • 8 September 2009 - We've just been engaged by the brand-new NSW Office of the Information Commissioner, to help develop its policy and education program over the next few months, prior to commencement of the new open government reforms.
  • 19 August 2009 - We've just published Edition 3.2 of "PPIPA in Practice", our annotated guide to the primary NSW privacy statute.
  • 18 August 2009 - We were recently commissioned by Privacy Victoria to develop some guidelines on data matching; see item below at 5 August.  The resulting guide, Data Matching in the Public Interest, has just garnered praise from the other side of the planet!  One of the Canadian provincial Privacy Commissioners has just written a letter congratulating Privacy Victoria on “this excellent document” for “the important contribution it represents in this area”.
  • 17 August 2009 - The Government 2.0 Taskforce (intended to "make government information more accessible and usable — to establish a pro-disclosure culture around non-sensitive public sector information") has published our submission on the need for practical, decision-making assistance for privacy and FOI officers, if we are to achieve a less risk averse approach to access to information requests.

  • 18 June 2009 - The NSW Government has tabled the Government Information (Information Commissioner) Bill 2009.  Submissions made to the Department of Premier and Cabinet on the earlier draft Bill - including our submission - are now available on the DPC website.
  • 25 May 2009 - Salinger Privacy has been commissioned by Privacy Victoria to finalise a data-matching guide and checklist.
  • 21 May 2009 - Submissions made to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on the draft FOI Amendment (Reform) Bill and the Information Commissioner Bill - including our submission - are now available on the PM&C website.

  • 6 May 2009 - Our Director Anna Johnston spoke at today's "Privacy in Practice" seminar, hosted by the Australian Privacy Commissioner as part of Privacy Awareness Week.  Anna's topic was "How to integrate PIAs into your processes and systems".
  • 4 May 2009 - The Victorian Privacy Commissioner Helen Versey today launched Privacy Victoria's revised PIA Guide and two accompanying practical tools that we developed for her Office - a template PIA Report and a list of common privacy risks and mitigation strategies.  To mark the occasion we also conducted a half-day workshop in Melbourne for Victorian public sector officials on conducting PIAs.
  • 29 April 2009 - Salinger Privacy has been prequalified by AGIMO for streamlined Australian Government procurement in relation to Project Governance, and Business Case Analysis and Development.  PIAs may fit into either of these categories.  See the ICT Management Consultants Multi-use List for more on procurement issues.
  • 15 April 2009 - Salinger Privacy has been engaged by a Victorian government agency to conduct a PIA for a proposal being considered as part of a large IT-related project.  The project budget is expected to be around $100 million if implemented on a whole-of-government basis.
  • 27 March 2009 - The Australian Privacy Commissioner has announced the program for the "Privacy in Practice" seminar, to be held in Sydney on 6 May, for Privacy Awareness Week.  Come along to hear our Director Anna Johnston lead off the day with her session on "How to integrate PIAs into your processes and systems".
  • 18 March 2009 - The Australian Attorney-General, the Hon Robert McLelland MP, referred in Parliament to our recent PIA for AusCheck, stating that "members may find both the privacy impact assessment and the departmental commentary useful in demystifying the operational aspect of the bill".
  • 11 March 2009 - We have been commissioned by Privacy Victoria to revise and update their PIA Guide.  Our Director Anna Johnston spoke at the Privacy Victoria Network meeting today to outline the project's objectives and process.
  • 3 March 2009 - Salinger Privacy has just completed a PIA for AusCheck.  The PIA related to the AusCheck Amendment Bill 2009, which seeks to extend AusCheck's functions to include national security background checking.
  • 3 March 2009 - Publication of our Special Briefing on navigating disclosure obligations
  • 5 January 2009 - We've just released the 2009 edition (Edition 3) of Conducting Workplace Surveillance, which incorporates changes made by the commencement of the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW)
